ABS Family,
May 11, 2008 is Global Day of Prayer. Please include in your prayers special petitions for Lebanon and Myanmar. (Read more details below).
For the last three days, Lebanon is witnessing riots and unrest all over the capital, which has now spread to other parts of the country. The opposition, headed by the Shiite party Hezbollah, is leading these riots in reaction to recent government decisions taken last Tuesday. Roads, airport, and port have been closed, and Beirut is witnessing (again!) street fighting between various militia factions. Several media services were forced to close down by the opposition, and there are militias spreading in every corner of the city. Retaliations and reactions to the commotion in Beirut is taking place in other parts of the country, but so far it has been calm in the Christian-populated areas. The Lebanese army and police forces are standing neutral in the conflict and have not engaged in any of this upheaval. The Bible Society in Lebanon has closed two of its bookshops in Beirut, but they are continuing to operate out of their main office building and their Books for Life resource center. Please pray for a quick end to this conflict and the return of stability to Lebanon.
Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar last weekend which devastated five regions. State-run media reported that more than 22,000 people were found dead with another 41,000 missing. Hundreds of thousands are now homeless. The roof and upper part of Bible House in Myanmar was damaged by the cyclone. Last month, the Society received a large stock of Bibles, and they are not sure whether the warehouse has been damaged. At the moment, there is no water, electricity or telephone service. Like many other residents of Yangon, Mar Gay Gyi's (General Secretary of the Bible Society of Myanmar) family and staff members have not had proper meals for more than five days now. There is a shortage of food, and prices have significantly increased. Church buildings have been damaged and there may be victims among Christians. Please that God would bring loving comfort, faith, and provision to all who have experienced loss.
Thank you
